The Visual Worlds Art Competition and Exhibition forms an exciting part of the Margaret River Readers & Writers Festival with works displayed before and throughout the event, adding a unique perspective on the festival theme for all to enjoy and contemplate.
The theme of this year's festival is 'Written Worlds' and the 2021 Visual Art Competition and Exhibition will bring this to life through 'Visual Worlds'.
Western Australian artists over the age of 17 were invited to enter and to respond to the festival theme with an artwork that portrays a view of the future, which can be possible, or highly imaginary.
24 artists rose to the challenge with 27 entries to be displayed in the Margaret River HEART gallery from the 3rd to 16th May. The entries include sculpture, paintings and prints with all artworks available for sale.
Festival Director Sian Baker said she was delighted by the entries.
"It is wonderful to see the different interpretations on the festival theme and to have such a great range of works on display," Ms Baker said.
"Sculptural pieces include a large steel and wood gate created by Adam English, two fascinating Bio Art Mycelium torsos by Kate Marzohl-Duffy and barrel fired ceramics by Seasaltware to name just a few.
"I am also delighted that Emily Jackson, creator of the 2021 Readers & Writers Festival image has also submitted an entry into the exhibition.
"Thank you to everyone that has entered, the artworks will provide visual contemplation and appreciation in addition to the festival's literary program."
The official opening will be held on Wednesday 12 May frpm 5pm to 7pm when the first, second and third prize winners will be announced.
Thanks to the Augusta Margaret River Shire for providing second prize, Westpac Bank for third prize and Margaret River Art Studio for the People's Choice prize.
Thank you to Dr Ann Schilo, Curtin University Coordinator of Postgraduate Studies in the School of Art, for judging the competition.
