ABOUT 30 members of the Out South West LGBTQI+ community took part in a protest against an event hosted by the Australian Christian Lobby on Monday.
Held at the Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre to a sold out audience, the event titled 'The Truth of It' featured Australian Christian Lobby managing director Martin Iles talking on scripture applied to so-called "thorny issues".
The event was originally cancelled at the Albany Entertainment Centre after Perth Theatre Trust refused to hire out the state-owned facility for the event, saying the content of the show conflicted with venue hire policies. But the decision was revoked just days later.
According to the policy, the Trust will not enter an agreement to hire a venue "where the content of the event does not represent the views of the Western Australian Government or the vast majority of Western Australians".
Both the Albany and a Perth event were sold out.
Concerns raised by the Out South West group were around the Australian Christian Lobby "pushing hatred" towards "things they don't see as Christian", including those who identify as LGBTQI+, according to group member Cassandra Hymers.
Australian Christian Lobby national director of politics Wendy Francis was the master of ceremonies for the event, and said the group's "heart went out" to the LGBQTI+ group who were protesting.
"We want to help and we do so. We do love them and we welcome their questions. But a non-negotiable is we will continue to share God's word," Ms Francis said to the audience.
The event featured a variety of talks as well as live music and prayer.
The Australian Christian Lobby's 'The Truth of It' live event was most recently held at the Queens Park Theatre in Geraldton on Wednesday.
