Busselton resident Neil Honey was 15 years-old when his favourite team, the Melbourne Demons won their last premiership.
It was extra special for Mr Honey because his father was a Collingwood fan, so he took delight in seeing Melbourne win by four points over his dad's team.
"He was filthy," Mr Honey said.
"We used to spar a fair bit about Melbourne and Collingwood."
Mr Honey said it was seeing Ron Barassi play which made him become a Melbourne fan.
"I have always been a Ron Barassi fan, I have the number plates 031 MFC with Melbourne logo in the middle," he said.
Mr Honey has also been lucky enough to meet the AFL legend more than once as well.
However, he recalls how he couldn't watch the grand final in full on the television, they only showed highlights the next day.
"You never had any footage, couldn't appreciate it like you do now," he said.
Melbourne's next chance of a premiership wasn't until 1987, but fell down in the preliminary final.
"It was the year Jim Stynes ran over the mark and gave a free kick to Buchannara who got the goal and Hawthorn won," he said.
Melbourne then played in the grand final against Essendon in 2000 in which they lost again.
Mr Honey said it had been a long journey, but you have to stick with your team 'through thick and thin'.
"When the Eagles come along I thought 'I'm not going to change,'" he said.
Mr Honey said he was mystified when Melbourne went from reaching the preliminary final in 2018, to tumbling down to 17th in 2019.
"I don't know what happened, couldn't work why they were playing so badly," he said.
In 2020 Melbourne just missed out on the finals after finishing ninth.
Now Melbourne aren't just in the Grand Final, but it will be played in Perth.
Despite being a Melbourne member, Mr Honey hasn't been able to secure a ticket to the match.
"I won't pay thousands of dollars for a ticket, I think that is immoral," he said.
So if Mr Honey can't get a ticket between now and Grand Final day, he will be watching it with a group of mates in Darwin.
"I will be a bit nervous on the day, I will have to keep myself busy," he said.
His pick is Melbourne to win by three goals and for Clayton Oliver to get the Norm Smith Medal.
