Residents and landowners who are eligible to vote in the upcoming local government elections are being urged to return completed ballot papers on or before the Saturday 16 October 2021 deadline.

As of Monday October 4, the Western Australian Electoral Commission reported 1897 packages, out of the 11,737 distributed, had been returned to achieve a participation rate of 16.16 per cent to date.

In the 2019 elections the Shire of Augusta Margaret River Local Government Area achieved a 35.7 per cent participation rate.

Voters have the option of returning ballot papers to the WA Electoral Commission in the reply paid envelope provided so that is received by the due date, or by attending the Shire of Augusta Margaret River Offices on Wallcliffe Road and posting it into the ballot box.

The Shire Offices are open to the public from 9am to 4pm weekdays, and will be open on election day, Saturday 16 October, between 8am and 6pm.

Once the new seven-member Council has been sworn in, they will vote for their Shire President and Deputy Shire President at their first meeting.

Shire of Augusta Margaret River CEO Stephanie Addison-Brown said all elections were important but this one particularly so given a majority of Council seats were being contested.

"I'd encourage everyone to participate in the democratic election process," she said.

"It's a once in every two-year opportunity to consider who you want to represent you and the wider community."
