MARGARET River once again hosted the who's who of Western Australian Surfing over the weekend for the 33rd Margaret River Surfing Classic.
Held at the newly redeveloped Surfer's Point, organizers and competitors were blessed with blue skies and clean 2-3 foot peaks making for some exciting surfing over the three days.
Despite a brief interruption from 11am to 1pm on Saturday in response to a nearby shark sighting, spectators gathered on the lawns most of the weekend to cheer their favourite surfers on with the finals concluding at 12 noon on Sunday.
The blue ribbon event, Open Men's final, saw past winner Jake Paterson up against one of world's most exciting junior surfers, Jack Robinson, local big wave charger, Dino Adrian and Trigg legend Luke Campbell.
Waves were scarce in the 25 minute final, but in a close tussle Dino came out on top in the last 30seconds, milking a left with a series of stylish turns all the way past the inside of the reef to victory.
The event held in memoryof several local surfing identities was strongly supported by Margaret River business owners and assisted by Surfing Western Australia.
Stalwart of the Margaret River Boardriders Club Steve Ryan was stoked with the success of the event and club president Brett Hardy thanked the members for all their hard work.
The presentations were held at the Settlers Tavern with local surfers featuring heavily in the awards for all divisions showing the strength of Margaret River surfing.
