IT was 1999 and well into the history of the Margaret River Classic surfing contest, which has been held since 1975.
This particular year, surfers hit the waves for the Paddle Race, among other divisions. Winners of the day were Geoff Goulden in first place, and Tom Delaney in second.
Traditionally, this "locals" event has been driven by the people of Margaret River and in recent years run by the Margaret River Boardriders.
The Classic is a feature event on the calendar because it involves all ages and recognises the efforts of local surfing identities that have passed away between then and now. Hamish MacKenzie (who passed away in 1974), Creed Barnes (1989), Lindsay Thompson (1996) and Steve Robinson (2000) each have a division dedicated to them. Over the years, the event has attracted surfers from all over the country but remains an event that has deep roots for the locals.
