Augusta Margaret River Shire council candidates:
COUNCIL hopeful Doug Thompson wants Augusta to get a fair go and a fair share of the Augusta Margaret River Shire budget.
The past-president of the Leeuwin Lions Club, and present president of the Augusta Chamber of Commerce, wants to see change at the next election.
"I believe we don't get a fair go out of the shire," he said.
"We're the forgotten baby in the system."
There are many areas where Mr Thompson believed the shire could improve its plans and wants to see changes to the shire's Ellis Street Jetty Precinct plans, a reduction in rates and better waste management in the area.
Last week he presented shire councillors more than 100 submissions of those opposed the current plan to build 20 new trailer parks at the Ellis Street Jetty, but they did not sway the shire's decision.
"I don't know how many phone calls I've received from residents of Augusta who are not happy about the Ellis Street Jetty upgrades," he said.
"Why is the development of this wonderful parkland area so tied to getting a government grant?
"I am not against spending on any project in Augusta but let's do it properly."
Mr Thompson believes rates are creeping too high and councillors need to look at ways to curb the annuaeach yearl increase.
"Even a 1 per cent saving is a big saving," he said.
"Times are tough and everyone needs to make savings from businesses to residents to the shire."
After seeing too much rubbish dumped in the area Mr Thompson wants it to be easier for residents to get rid of their rubbish.
With the Paul Road waste transfer station open for just four hours on a Sunday Mr Thompson was concerned some elderly residents could miss out.
"We have the transfer station open one day a week," he said
"Otherwise it's an 80 kilometre trip and you're charged at the end of it.
"I believe the shire should look at the fact many residents are elderly and a 80km trip is out of the picture."
Finding solutions such as community groups manning the station are some areas he would like to explore this election.
Mr Thompson is standing in the Leeuwin Ward.
