The Harvey-Brunswick- Leschenault Lions continued their push towards the 2016 finals on Saturday night with a dominant win over Eaton.
Holding the Boomers to just 2.2 in the opening half, the visiting Lions kicked 8.7 to grab the game by the scruff of the neck.
There was no let up in the back half of the encounter with the Lions again outscoring Eaton eight goals to two.
By the final siren, HBL led 16.11.107 to 4.9.33. The Lions now sit second on the ladder with 10 wins from 13 games.
Special mention must also go to the Lions’ reserves and colts sides that are both undefeated after 13 games – a clear sign that the club are building a strong foundation for ongoing success.
Saturday also saw Collie continue to shape as a side with strong finals aspirations after they secured a four point win over Harvey.
The Eagles were up-and-about early, leading by 19 points at the first break. But the Bulls wrestled back control to take a 14 point advantage into half time.
The two teams drew close together in the third with Collie holding a four point advantage at the final huddle. Try as they might both teams fought to breakaway but with the pressure on, each managed 1.3 in the final term to see the Eagles hold on for a 9.12.66 to 9.8.62 win.
Sunday bought with it a small scare for the top-of-the-table Tigers.
South Bunbury have been the side to beat this year but a plucky Augusta-Margaret River held a quarter time lead of 4.3.27 to 2.1.13. By the main break, the margin had been trimmed to just three points.
Four third-quarter goals gave South Bunbury a 14 point lead at the final change and they held off a late push by the Hawks to prevail 12.6.78 to 10.8.68.
The Bunbury Bulldogs continued to dominate the Payne Park Kennel with a 10 goal victory over Busselton.
The Dogs kicked five majors in the first term and led by 20 points at half time.
The young Magpies side continued to show patches of high intensity and skill but could not keep pace with a side set to play deep into the finals.
When the last siren sounded, Bunbury had triumphed 19.9.123 to 9.9.63. Matt Martin shone for the Bulldogs with seven goals.
To finish the round Donnybrook kept their slim finals chances alive courtesy of six goals to Jeff Smith.
The Dons led Carey Park early and looked well-on-top at half time. By the final change the Panthers had closed the margin to just four points but Donnybrook rallied to run out 11.8.74 to 8.9.57 victors.
