One of the best gastronomic successes on our region in recent times has not been in a winery nor a restaurant but at the South West Institute of Technology.
It is here that, every fortnight, TAFE hospitality and cookery students put on lunches in association with the Margaret River Farmers’ Market.
Titled Gather & Feast, the menus are decided on by the students themselves using predominately produce gathered from the market. They not only cook superb dishes, but present them beautifully.
It is hardly surprising that the lunches frequently sell out given the quality of the experience and the fact that the lunch costs $30 per head.
Plus, wine produced by Curtin University students from fruit grown at the High School is terrific - and well priced.
A slight hiccup occurred just before last Saturday’s main was served when a water main outside the dining area burst and water came rushing in and under the tables.
No, it was not a drill - as some of us thought - it was the real thing, it was dealt with effectively and we were soon relocated outside where it was dry.
All power to those involved for making this a pleasurably memorable occasion.
A BIG thumbs up!
