Hot cars, hot music, hot food and some of Australia’s hottest performers are lined up for this weekend’s inaugural Margi Gras Festival.
Kicking off from 5pm on Saturday February 10, the event will be held on the lawns of the Margaret River Cultural Centre on Wallcliffe Road and promises an inclusive, welcoming environment for all.
The free festival will feature entertainment from Perth Drag Queens (family friendly during the festival, adults-only show at The River Hotel After Party), live music, belly dancing and a surprise guest performance.
Kids can take a ride on a unicorn (yes, you read correctly), take a jump on the bouncy castle and enjoy the crazy antics of Kaptain Quirk with his giant rainbow bubbles and stilt walking.
Attendees can also witness Margaret River’s first public same-sex wedding when organiser Rebecca Hannan marries her long-term partner Sunny Michelle Hannan.
The bridal party will arrive in style thanks to a motorcade of stunning retro vehicles along Bussell Highway – Buicks, Mustangs, Thunderbirds and a 64 Chevy Bel Air.
The wedding is set to take place between 5.30pm and 6.30pm and singles are encouraged to stick around to catch the bouquet.
The licensed event will offer Queer Beer lager and MargiGras-Rita cocktails for purchase along with wine and other local beers.
Willow Grill will prepare four dishes – porcini arancini, lamb cutlets, pork belly and a quinoa pumpkin spinach salad – with each dish just $5 and proceeds returned to Margi Gras.
Festival-goers are encouraged to wear bright colours and bring a sense of fun and togetherness to the community gathering.
“Outrageous attire is totally encouraged, and if you’re up for it, sign up to the Queen of Margi Gras competition on our website,” said Ms Hannan.
A Messages of Love and Equality Wall will be erected for attendees to share their creativity and messages of support for the festival.
