For Vinnies volunteer Michael Pascoe, donating time to a worthy cause has had a deep impact on his life, and he is urging other community members to sign on to help the organisation.
“I really enjoy volunteering it gives me a sense of purpose and belonging,” Mr Pascoe said.
“Through volunteering I have an opportunity to see the generous donations given by our community raise revenue in our shop to help those in need,” he said.
“Our team of volunteers are awesome their ages and backgrounds are varied. We always have a laugh.”
The Margaret River man, who signed up to volunteer soon after he arrived in town more than three years ago, is a hands-on team leader, covering a range of tasks including driving the Vinnies ute to empty donation bins around Margaret River and Cowaramup, collecting furniture donations and sorting donated items.
“I don’t know what we would do without Michael, he is the reliable backbone of our sorting and donations area,” said Leanne Schilder, manager of the Vinnies Margaret River store.
Volunteers and members are the core of the Vinnies Western Australian chapter, with assistance largely provided through local groups known as ‘conferences’.
Mr Pascoe said he was proud to work with a group that offered a helping hand to local people.
"Vinnies offers compassionate help for families seeking assistance, most requests coming in being for food, furniture and clothing as well as help with bills,” he said.
In the past 12 months the South West Region of Vinnies has assisted over 4000 families and the group is calling for locals to join their efforts and keep up with demand.
Those interested in volunteering are encouraged to drop by the Vinnies Margaret River shop between 9.00am to 5.00pm, Monday to Saturday at 4/40 Station Road.
