After more than 20 years in the music business, you could forgive Grinspoon-frontman and sometime solo artist Phil Jamieson for being a little jaded.
The hardworking musician is about to embark on an exhaustive national tour which will see him visit music festivals, country towns and city venues with his one-man show.
“I’m actually driving myself this time, keeping things simple and just sort of travelling around, playing gigs and doing the work,” Jamieson told the Mail last week.
“These shows are really stripped back, different in some ways to what people would expect from Grinspoon shows but at the same time I’ll be playing the old stuff as well as some newer things, it’s a real mix,” he said.
Jamieson said despite such a long career in his chosen profession, he refused to become complacent or rest on the success of his previous years.
“Every job I do is different, I was onstage recently doing musical theatre in American Idiot, then there was the Grinspoon tour last year, I did the White Album tour, and now this solo tour… I take all of it as seriously as each other, and I think if you want to survive in an industry like this you have to take it seriously.
“I think if people are willing to give up their $30 and come out on a Wednesday or a Thursday night to see me sitting on a stage in their town, I should be recognising the agreement we have and doing my best to make sure people have a good time, or get something from the experience.”
The latest tour sees Jamieson on his own, shedding the familiar feel of a live band on stage with him.
“It’s definitely a different dynamic, but also I think at the time Grinspoon was – and essentially still is – that sort of muscular, standout rock and roll, and now you’ve got the people who grew up with that music and going to those big festivals wanting to have dinner, and be able to have a drink and a chat, or just have a different kind of interaction with the person on stage.”
Phil Jamieson will play Settlers Tavern on Thursday November 8. For tickets and show information visit www.settlerstavern.com
