The 2019 Djeran Youth Week Festival arrives at the Margaret River Youth Precinct this Saturday April 13.
The festival is a joint partnership between the Undalup Association Inc and Shire of Augusta Margaret River and aims to provide cultural and youth art focused activities to the region as part of National Youth Week and showcase the youth week theme of "Nurture the Now".
The Undalup Association has developed a range of cultural activities and entertainment based around the history and rich traditions of our local Wadandi (Saltwater People) Aboriginal community.
A Welcome to Country and will be joined by Binjareb Middar cultural dances as well as showcase a performance by young Aboriginal hip hop artist Shannon Hart Cole.
Undalup Vice President Rachelle Cousins said Cole had also worked with the National Disability Insurance Scheme to develop a children's activity book entitled Shannon's Story.
These books will be for sale at the event, and Shannon will be available to sign them personally which is a great outcome," she said.
Bush tucker tastings will take place alongside a display of traditional ochres, bush tool and materials, weavings and skins while young people will have the opportunity to create their own boomerangs, native animal and clapping stick art works.
The Margaret River Youth Affairs Council will be conducting tie dye workshops, and attendees will also be able to check out the spray art workshop with local artist Karl Heussenstamm, skateboard workshops with Margaret River Skate school, social health and wellbeing stalls and live music and DJ's throughout the day.
The Soggybones cafe will be open for business providing food and coffee for festivalgoers.
"I hope this event incorporates cultural awareness, health and wellbeing support and the opportunity for young people to showcase some of the great things they have achieved," said Shire of Augusta Margaret River Youth Community Development Trainee Kate Mann.
