A new beginner level class will be held in Dunsborough next month, for those wanting to get involved in the ancient practice of Tai Chi.
Offered by Tai Chi Internal Arts, which holds regular classes at the Old Dunsborough Hall, the beginner's class will be held on Wednesday February 7 from 9am to 10am, with a four month course to follow.
Spokesperson Jen Guidera said the organisation focused on internal Tai Chi, giving participants a low-impact mind-body practice.
"Tai Chi is different from other exercises because it focuses on coordinated extension of joints and body turning, rather than stretching.
"If you can walk, you can do Tai Chi, so it is suitable for all age groups.
"In Tai Chi practice, practitioners learn to focus on the movements so mind chattering slowly dissipates, leading to a state of mindfulness."
Ms Giudera said it was the perfect exercise to achieve optimum health.
"The benefits of Tai Chi include improved flexibility, balance and posture as well as decreased stress and increased energy.
"It is also a way of giving back to society and helping people to improve their wellbeing."
Part of the internal arts practice is Qigong, combining breath and simple movements to circulate Qi (chi) energy in the body.
"Qigong can harmonise, strengthen and have a healing effect on the functioning of all the internal organs and bodily systems.
"Qigong can be practised anywhere because it requires very little space and is the perfect companion exercise for Tai Chi."
Tai Chi Internal Arts is a not for profit, non-religious, volunteer community association, where all instructors and committee members volunteer their time.
The cost for joining the group is $175 per year, or $90 for the four month beginner course.
