MARRON season opens at noon, Tuesday, January 8 until Tuesday, February 5.
Keen fishers are reminded that there are bag and possession limits and minimum size limits for marron. You may only accumulate your daily bag limit up to 16 marron during the marron season.
The possession limit applies everywhere except in your permanent place of residence. A separate limit applies near designated Trophy Waters.
When measuring marron, a
lways use an approved gauge and measure from the tip of the horn protruding from the marron’s forehead, to the back edge of the marron's carapace.
If the gauge fits over the back of the carapace, or is even slightly loose, the marron is too small and must be returned to the water.Females with eggs (berried) or live young attached beneath their bodies and undersize marron must be returned to the water immediately.
Only one approved form of fishing gear may be used at a time, these being drop nets (six per licensed fisher) scoop net (one per licensed fisher) and snare (one bushman’s pole per fisher).
You must have a licence to fish for marron and be able to produce it if required. Application forms are available from Department of Fisheries offices and Australia Post outlets. Otherwise you can buy or renew your licence online at the Department of Fisheries website, www.fish.wa.gov.au.
Marron waters include Collie River (upstream of the Australind Bypass Road and downstream of the Wellington Dam wall – and upstream of the Mungalup Road Bridge), and Deep, Gardner, Warren, Donnelly, Blackwood, Capel and Preston rivers and their tributaries.
Snare-only waters include Margaret River, outside of closures. You may not fish for marron in the Margaret River and its tributaries upstream of the Ten Mile Brook junction, to protect the hairy marron species, or waters within 300m upstream and 50m downstream of the Bussell Hwy traffic bridge.
