The self-deprecating and dry musical humour of kinda-sorta-German brother sister band Die Roten Punkte is coming to Margaret River this week, to confuse and crack up audiences with their unique style of performance art and comedy.
Die Roten Punkte’s Otto and Astrid have been compared to Spinal Tap and Flight of the Conchords for their parody of the pop musician lifestyle.
Aside from the duo’s obvious comedy roots, Otto and Astrid insist their status as serious rock musicians is unquestionable and can’t understand the laughter they get from the performances.
“We have always been a serious rock band, we’re about rock and roll and making music, I don’t understand why people laugh when we’re on stage,” deadpanned Astrid.
“We write songs about what’s important, for example the first song we play is called Rock and Roll Monster, it’s about a monster that eats all the rock and roll and explodes.
Their tantrum-throwing, avant garde stylings have taken the painted duo around the world, where they have wowed audiences from Montreal to Melbourne.
The show took out the award for Most Outstanding Show at the 2015 London Fringe before Otto and Astrid joined American singer-songwriter Amanda Palmer in support of her tour across Europe, Australia and the USA.
“Sometimes when we hear music and it’s so good our brains just explode.”
Otto said the pair have been playing music for as long as they could remember.
“I can remember Astrid using pots and pans as a drum set,” he said.
According to the pair, their joint musical career has been greatly influenced by a fateful day celebrating Astrid’s twelfth birthday.
If you ask Astrid, their parents were killed in a tragic accident involving a train.
Otto, however, will tell you it was a lion.
“That’s were our name comes from, Die Roten Punkte means The Red Dot in English, and the blood from our parents landed in dots,” Astrid said.
“Also in English it sounds like Die Rotten Punk, which is pretty cool too.”
Music aside, Otto and Astrid said they were thrilled to be visiting the South West and couldn’t wait to swim in our world class beaches.
"I’ll make sure to go swimming with Otto so there’s less chance I’ll be eaten by a shark,” Astrid said.
Die Roten Punkte will play the Margaret River Cultural Centre next Tuesday October 25 from 7.30pm. Tickets ($38 Adults, $33 Arts Hub Members, $20 Youth, $100 Family) are available through www.artsmargaretriver.com or by calling 9758 7316. The show is suitable for 14+.
