MARGARET River Senior High School Emergency Service Cadets had a hands-on lesson about radio communication last week.
Members of the Margaret River Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service visited the school and gave a demonstration in operating the cadets' own 80-channel UFH radios. These radios were supplied after a successful $15,000 Lottery Grant application last year.
The lesson from the Fire and Rescue Service was one of many to be held during the term, as the group aims to support the cadets and inspire them to continue volunteering in their adult life.
On Thursday, Captain Jeff Bushby spoke about the radios' battery packs, belt clips and PTT, or "push to talk" buttons.
Cadets will use these radios to communicate with each other and emergency services at events such as the Margaret River Show and Anzac Day.
"At this stage we will all be using the same channel," Mr Bushby said.
Future lessons will involve hose and ladder work on the oval, fire extinguishers, bush fire prevention and some visits to the station.
"Hopefully they'll be able to take them into their later life," Mr Bushby said of the lessons.
Mr Bushby also presented cadets Olivia Coffey, Liam Darby, Bradley McDonald and Amber Towndrow with certificates on Thursday, awarding them for their contribution at a recent meet-and-greet parent night.
New cadets are always welcomed to join through the high school, especially year 8s.
