SPARTAN warriors have a reputation for impressive endurance and the ability to persevere through a lack of comfort.
The Spartan Race in Perth on April 18 will capitalise on this idea, with Janet Smith saying she is ready to go to war.
“I think it’s a sport of the future,” Smith said.
The Margaret River bred athlete said she was hungry to compete after entering into the race previously with Smith basing her training around boot camp style techniques.
As a fitness instructor she utilises training techniques away from the standard gym type practises, which includes working with sandbags, rope climbing, flipping heavy tires and much more.
She loves running so much that she has entered into any trail like event in the region over the past few years.
Doing 10 to 12 of these styled events in Australia in a year Smith said she ventured to the Spartan Race world championships last year in Vermont, Kilington.
Smith said the scenery was something else, nothing like what was in Australia.
She said her drive in these events all started when she was selected as one of 12 athletes to take part in Matt Murphy’s ‘Search for Hurt’ documentary.
She said through the last 12 months of training she had met the most amazing people who had supported her in her fitness conquests, particularly through utilising social media.
Smith said the sport drew a real community atmosphere and encouraged a sense of belonging, with the race not just for elite racers.
With training going well, Smith is looking forward to competing for the number one spot in the Perth Spartan Sprint race, with aspirations to head to Brisbane for the next step up and onward to America.
