The Margaret river Hawks Cricket Club is now just three days away from their first match of the season with the B-grade side taking on Saint Mary’s at Churchill Park on Saturday afternoon.
Saint Mary’s will go into this match as red hot favourites, after finishing the previous season in third place while the Hawks finished in sixth position.
Club spokesman Michael Earl said the long winter had given the players something to work against in their preparation.
“With a wetter than usual prep, the Hawks will go into this match underdone but still hungry for the win,” Mr Earl said.
“The players are gunning for some good weather and decent matches to sink their teeth into.”
With an A grade bye, the Hawks will also debut their newest recruit, Welshman Mike Humphreys.
Wicketkeeper and batsman Humphreys has been tasked with assisting the junior coaches to help grow the young Margaret River cricketers and Mr Earl said the club was pleased to have him on board.
“We are really glad to have Mike on board, he is already a very valuable member of the group and we can see him being a strong influence on our younger players,” Mr Earl said.
“Having the overseas players join in the competition gives a new perspective to both our local group and the visiting players, it’s a fantastic way to develop the team’s skill and experience while staying close to home.”
21 year old Humphreys said he was excited to take on the challenge at the Margaret River club.
"I’m very thankful for the opportunity to play cricket abroad for the first time.”
“I’ll also be assisting the Hawks groundsman with curating the wicket and oval preparation on all three ovals, which will be a great learning experience as well,” he said.
The Hawks continue to seek players for the upcoming cricket season and have a position available for anyone who would like to join in.
All gear is supplied across three playing grade levels, allowing anyone with an interest in cricket to take part in the Saturday competition regardless of experience or skills.
“Fly in fly out workers, new arrivals in town, whether this is your first year ever or you have played all your life, the Hawks want you now,” Mr Earl said.
