Work on the facilities began on Monday and will replace the existing amenities at the Scout Hall, aimed at increasing capacity from one cubicle to six.
The toilet block is designed to meet disability access standards in line with the Building Code of Australia, with further consideration given to safety and usability.
Shire President Ian Earl said the start of construction marked the official commencement of the overall precinct upgrade, which will include major upgrades to the skate park and other facilities.
“This is the first exciting step in seeing our youth facilities upgraded following the announcement of significant State funding for the project,” he said.
In May 2016 Premier Colin Barnett visited the skate park to formally announce funding for the upgrades, which were the result of extensive community consultation and planning by skate and BMX experts.
The $1.39 million funding grant from the State government will see the addition of an adventure playground, nature play area and the potential for a world class skate bowl to be installed.
“The spirit and the buoyancy and the optimism in the area is really quite infectious,” Mr Barnett said.
“The new youth precinct project will provide a much needed upgrade to the obviously well-used skatepark.”
“The works will see the creation of areas where kids can climb trees and doing the things I did as a kid,” he said.
Construction and work on the toilet block facilities is expected to be completed by late April/early May 2017 and will service both the youth precinct and the sporting events held on the adjoining oval.
Major works to upgrade the skate park and other facilities in the precinct are due to start in mid to late 2017. The Shire advised that a proportion of the area would be fenced off to allow this work to occur.
