A proposed “all in one” abalone experience in the South West town of Augusta has been given the go ahead, paving the way for the development at the town’s boat harbour.
Developed by Ocean Grown Abalone (OGA), the site will be home to an export seafood processing facility, shops, restaurant and an education space.
OGA Executive Director Ian Ricciardi said the development would offer a new tourism destination for the region.
“We see this development as a great benefit to the South West region,” he said.
“Not only will it create employment but it will also bring tourism to the area with shops, restaurants and an education space communicating OGA’s unique sea ranching technique used to harvest wild abalone.
“Putting Augusta on the world map is something we are excited about, and we plan on making our business a destination.”
The approval was granted last week after months of planning and development discussions with architects Cameron Chisholm Nicol and the AMR Shire.
“The Shire is extremely pleased to assist Ocean Grown Abalone to progress the development of their innovative and exciting new industry,” said Shire President Ian Earl.
“The OGA base at the Augusta Boat Harbour will be the catalyst for further activation of the harbour, creating employment and opportunities at this great new facility.”
The development approval comes at a crucial time for the company, which is expected to list on the ASX in the third quarter of 2017.
Earthworks at the harbour site are expected to commence in January 2018.
