Alan Dale did it again at Tuesdays Veterans stableford (21) while Mike Lawson was a close second (20).
It was a big day in perfect conditions for the 38 hole MRCES Ladies foursomes championship.
The flu didn’t hold Megan Booth back to win this honour board event with Sarah Roddy. Kerry Farrelly and Sue Bloxam were second best with 178 c/b. Best nett score went to Wendy Chidgey and Leonie Bell (147) on a count back from the Rosies. (Basford & Burnett). Jo Pyatt won the 9 hole stableford with 18 points. The second round of the Four Cheeky Amigos drew a large field of 93 players. Graham Smith came out of top (43), followed by Geoff Barrett (40) and Dave Noske (38).
Val Melerie was top female player on Friday, while Fred Murton was top bloke (15). The first round of the Halsall/Skivinis Men’s Championships kicked off on Saturday. Jim House scored best on Saturday (71), best gross Jules Ashton (79) while Roy Warren won Sunday (69), best gross Marc Halsall (80). The prestigious Paddy Barrett trophy went to Dave Glasson (138), who could not get the smile of his face. Ray Mann in second (142) and Terry Halsall in third (147).
The women had a chance to shine at the Sunday mixed stableford; Allison Kelly just beat Wendy Chidgey on a count back both with 38 points. Rhonda Hearn scored 34 point for third place by just getting the better of Helen Priest. – Joe Setter
Augusta
The Augusta Golf Club put on a good turnout and display of great scores in the feature men’s game last Sunday in recognition of the volunteer workers who keep the course in such great condition all year round.
Groundsman’s Trophy Day saw Kim Hadley show the way with a tremendous stableford round of 47 points with his 75 off the stick, eclipsing what on any other day would have been winning scores by at least 6 points.
Runner up was Mike Heslington with a fine round of 41, third place went to Vice Captain Pat Cunningham 39, with Chris Robinson fourth on 38.
Best gross score outside of the winners went to Graeme Challis, with nearest the pins going to Craig Hadley, Joe Italiano and Barry Brown.
On the Saturday the men played a stroke round where Shad Nixon played very well to record a nett 62 for the win from runner up Barry Brown 70, with Kim Darragh third on 71. Nearest the pins went to Shad Nixon, Joe Italiano and Barry Brown.
Next Saturday and Sunday is the not to be missed Augusta ‘1000’ 4BBB played over 36 holes. – Nick Dornan
