The Shire of Augusta Margaret River released a statement on Monday advising residents that it would take measures to minimise risk and improve safety through WA's recently imposed COVID-19 lockdown.
In response to the rules covering the South West, Peel and Perth metro areas, the Shire said it had closed a number of facilities including the Margaret River Recreation Centre, Augusta Recreation Centre, Margaret River HEART, and Margaret River and Augusta libraries.
"Following State Government directives, we've closed some public facilities and adjusted the way we will deliver some services," Shire CEO Stephanie Addison-Brown said.
"This is to ensure people can access essential Shire services while abiding by the latest health advice from the Health Department.
The State Government has directed people to stay at home unless they need to:
- undertake duties as an essential worker or to transport an essential worker;
- shop for essentials like groceries, medicine and necessary supplies;
- medical or health care needs including compassionate requirements and looking after the vulnerable; and
- exercise within their neighbourhood, but only with one other person and only for one hour per day.
"While the Shire's delivery of services and operation of facilities might change if the situation requires it, waste and kerbside collection are slated to continue but may experience delays; customer services will be via telephone and email only; public toilets will be cleaned more frequently, but all other playgrounds, skateparks, outdoor gym equipment and public BBQs are closed."
There will be no click-and-collect or usage of the return chutes at the libraries and no new bookings will be taken at the caravan parks - though current guests will be permitted to stay provided health directives are followed.
Kids Club will operate to support essential workers only, and exercise and water-based exercise must take place within 5kms of the home for one hour or less.
To ensure residents have access to the latest information, the Shire's website will be maintained with up-to-date information on affected, cancelled or modified services including waste and kerbside collection, customer services, child care, gym memberships, caravan parks, exercise rules - including surfing and water-based sports - outdoor facilities, public libraries and ranger services.
Ms Addison-Brown said the information would be updated as required and urged people to stay informed on the latest health updates.
"This situation is fast-evolving and Shire officers are working hard to continue delivering services in COVID-safe ways," she said.
"In the meantime, I encourage everyone to wash their hands, maintain physical distance, wear face masks, and most importantly be safe."
